The City of La Porte Office of Emergency Management and City officials are actively monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic.

A novel coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China in December 2019. On February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization named the disease Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID‑19). This virus is causing an outbreak of respiratory disease in countries around the world. Though this outbreak was originally linked to a seafood and animal market (suggesting animal-to-person spread), person-to-person transmission was confirmed as the outbreak spread to individuals without exposure to the animal market. The US reported the first case of person-to-person transmission on January 30, 2020. (CDC, Emerging Infectious Disease)
