As mayor, Alton E. Porter, presides at La Porte City Council meetings, exercises other powers and performs other duties conferred and imposed upon him by the City Charter and ordinances of the City. He was elected mayor in 2004 after serving sixteen years on City Council.  Councilman Porter served three years in the At-Large A position and thirteen years in the At-Large B position. 

Mayor Porter attended La Porte High School and has been a La Porte resident since 1948.  He is a graduate of San Jacinto College and the University of Houston at Clear Lake.  Mayor Porter and his wife, Vicki, have two sons, Chris and Greg.  Mayor Porter is the founder and president of Specialty Gas Concepts (division of BMS, Inc.).  He is a member of First United Methodist Church of La Porte, Charter Director of the Alliance and Vice Chairman of Houston-Galveston Area Council’s (HGAC) AERCO Board.  He also served as past president of the La Porte-Bayshore Jaycees and the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Administrative Board of First United Methodist Church of La Porte and the Alliance.  He also served as past director of the La Porte Boys Baseball Association, the La Porte Youth Soccer Association, and the Rotary Club of La Porte.
