S.P.O.R.T. Special Populations Organized Recreation Therapy S.P.O.R.T. is designed to provide children, teens, and adults with mental and physical impairments the opportunity to engage in meaningful recreational activities, enhance fine and gross motor skills, and create lasting friendships in a safe and structured environment. S.P.O.R.T. is a year round program offering day camps in the summer, as well as after school and after work programs throughout the school year. We also offer an adult day program for adults with impairments who are independently functioning. An assessment with the Recreation Therapist is required to evaluate new participants for all programs. Special Olympics: This program is offered to participants with intellectual disabilities ages 8—Adult. Participants compete in basketball, bocce, bowling, volleyball, and track and field. This program is a co-op program with the La Porte I.S.D. (Ages 8-graduation are under L.P.I.S.D. Adults are under S.P.O.R.T. program.) Days: Tuesday & Thursday - 4:00-5:00pm
The Annual La Porte Special Olympics Banquet was recently held at the Special Programs Center. The La Porte Special Olympics is co-sponsored by the La Porte Parks & Recreation Department and the La Porte Independent School District. All of the Special Olympic athletes were honored at the banquet for their hard work, dedication, and received a certificate of participation. Special awards were given to the following participants:
